This page explains what a car computer check finds, what it cannot find, and how to get one in Cairo or Giza, either at our centre or at the car.
A car now has dozens of small computers, called control units, that run the engine, gearbox, brakes, airbags, steering and electrics. When one of them detects something wrong, it stores a fault code. A computer check connects a diagnostic scanner to the car and reads those codes from every control unit it can reach, not only the engine.
It is one of the six checks in our full inspection, and it can also be booked on its own when you only want an electronic opinion on the car.
That last point matters most. A seller can switch off a warning light for the day of the viewing. The record underneath is harder to hide.
A scanner reads what the car has recorded. It cannot see what the car never recorded. A worn clutch, a cracked chassis rail, a repainted door, a leak that has not triggered a sensor yet and a car that has been in an accident can all pass a computer scan with a clean result. That is why we treat the computer check as one part of the picture and not the whole picture. For the rest, see what a full inspection includes.
There is also a trick to watch for. Codes can be cleared with a scanner, and a car that has just had its codes cleared can look clean. An engineer who knows what to look for can often tell when that has happened, which is another reason to use someone who reads the results rather than only printing them.
You have two options, and both use the same equipment and produce the same written report.
The make matters. Different brands need different diagnostic software, so tell us the make, model and year when you call and we will confirm that we can read it properly.
A full inspection with a computer scan takes between half an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the car.
A clean result is good news but not a clean bill of health. A result with stored codes is not automatically a reason to walk away either. Some codes point to a cheap fix and others to an expensive one, and the report should tell you which is which. Use that to negotiate, to ask the seller for repairs before you buy, or to walk away from a car that hides something serious.

Yes. If you only want the electronic record, you can book the computer check alone. We usually suggest the full inspection, because the scan cannot see the body, paint or mechanical wear.
No. It finds what the car has recorded. That is why it is paired with a physical inspection.
The car needs to be available and the seller should agree to the time. We recommend that the engine is not started before we arrive, so the first start is observed.
If the car cannot be moved, read how our mobile car inspection in Cairo and Giza works.
