Online listing sites

Websites such as ContactCars and YallaMotor list cars from both private sellers and dealers, with photos, prices and basic details. They are the quickest way to see what is available and to learn the going prices for a model.

  • Good for: comparing prices, seeing a wide choice, shortlisting before you travel anywhere.
  • Watch for: photos that hide damage, out of date listings, and sellers who do not own the car.

Showrooms

Showrooms offer many cars in one place, and some will handle paperwork for you. The showroom is a business selling the car, though, so it is in its interest for you to buy.

  • Good for: convenience and being able to compare several cars on the same day.
  • Watch for: higher prices that include the showroom’s margin, and inspection reports produced by the showroom itself.

Private sellers

Buying directly from the owner often costs less, and you can ask the person who drove the car about its history.

  • Good for: lower prices and direct answers about how the car was used.
  • Watch for: missing paperwork, unpaid fines, and sellers who are not the registered owner.

Social media groups and word of mouth

Expat groups, neighbourhood groups and colleagues often know of cars for sale. Some are sold by people leaving the country.

  • Good for: finding cars that are not advertised elsewhere.
  • Watch for: unverified sellers and pressure to buy quickly.

Whichever you choose: inspect first

None of these places removes the need to check the car. A showroom car can have hidden damage, a private sale can have papers that do not match, and an online photo shows only what the seller chose to show. The sensible habit is to arrange an independent inspection before you pay a deposit, wherever the car came from.

We inspect at our centre in Nasr City, which is at 16 Ibn Qutayba, behind the International Garden, and our mobile inspection comes to the car anywhere in Cairo, Giza and nearby areas. If you are not sure which provider to use, see how to choose a car inspection company.

Questions to ask any seller

  1. Are you the registered owner, and can I see the original registration paper?
  2. Has the car been in an accident, flooded or repainted?
  3. Why are you selling it?
  4. Are all fines and fees paid?
  5. Will you allow an independent inspection before I pay?

The last question is the most telling. A seller who is happy for the car to be inspected has little to hide. If the answer is no, think carefully about why.

How the four options compare

Every channel trades something. Online listings give you range but little context. Showrooms give you convenience and sometimes a basic warranty or paperwork help, usually at a higher asking price. Private sellers give you the most room to negotiate and the least protection. Groups and word of mouth give you a story about the car, which is useful but not proof.

  • Who you are dealing with. A listing is often a stranger, a showroom is a business, a private seller is the owner, and a group contact is someone who knows someone.
  • What you can verify. In every channel you can verify the same things: the papers, the car and its condition. The channel does not do that for you.
  • How firm the price is. Showrooms usually have less room because of their margin. Private sellers usually have more.

Warning signs in any listing

  • The photos hide one side of the car or the engine bay.
  • The seller will only meet at a place of their choosing and never at your mechanic or an inspection centre.
  • The price is far below similar cars with no clear reason.
  • The seller pushes you to pay a deposit before you have seen the car properly.
  • The story keeps changing: one owner, then two, then “I am selling for a friend”.

None of these proves a problem on its own. Together, they are a reason to slow down.

Viewing the car the right way

Arrange to see the car in daylight, because dents, repaints and uneven panels are far easier to spot in natural light. Ask the seller not to start the engine before you arrive, because a cold start shows problems that disappear once the engine warms up. Bring someone with you if you can, and take your time. A seller with nothing to hide will not mind waiting while you look.

When you are happy with what you see, that is the moment to book a check. Our mobile inspection can meet you wherever the car is, so you do not need to move it. And if you want a view of the whole process, read how to buy a car in Egypt.
