Car Inspection Stations in Egypt: Your Options Compared

If you search for a car inspection station in Egypt, you will find a mix of very different places. Some are specialised inspection centres. Some are fuel stations that offer a quick computer read. Some are garages with a diagnostic machine. They are not interchangeable, and the right one depends on what you need to find out.

A pre-purchase check is not the same as a licence inspection

In some countries, a state inspection station checks cars on a fixed schedule. A buyer in Egypt choosing a used car should not assume that a similar system will protect them. A pre-purchase inspection here is a private service you choose and pay for, and its quality depends entirely on who does it. That is why it is worth looking carefully at the options.

Types of car inspection station

Fuel station checks

Quick and low cost. Normally a computer read and a short look, with a verbal opinion. Good for catching a warning light, but there is usually no lift, no paint thickness gauge and no written report.

Garages and workshops

Mechanics who know cars well. They can tell you about the engine and mechanical wear. However, many also earn money from repairs, and their findings are often verbal, with no structured report.

Showroom inspections

Done by the seller. They can be a useful starting point, but they are not independent, so they cannot replace a check done on your behalf.

Independent inspection centres

Purpose built for pre-purchase checks. They should offer a lift, a paint gauge, a diagnostic computer, a road test and a written report. This is the category we belong to.

What to look for at an inspection station

  • It does not sell cars or repair them.
  • It has a lift or ramp, a paint thickness gauge and a diagnostic computer.
  • It gives you a written report with photos.
  • It tells you the price before you travel.
  • It has an engineer, not only a general technician.

We explain the reasoning behind each point in how to choose a car inspection company.

What each type can and cannot tell you

  • Fuel station check: can show a warning light or an obvious fault code. Cannot show a repaired chassis, a repainted panel or what is under the car.
  • Garage: can judge engine noise, leaks and wear from experience. Cannot usually measure paint thickness or give you a structured written report.
  • Showroom inspection: can confirm the basics of a car the showroom wants to sell. It is not independent, so it cannot be your only source.
  • Independent centre: can inspect the chassis, paint, engine, gearbox, suspension and computer, and put everything in writing.

None of these is useless. The mistake is using a limited check to answer an unlimited question, such as “is this car safe to buy?”

Warning signs when you call an inspection station

  • A flat price quoted before they know anything about the car, which later goes up once you arrive.
  • No mention of a report, or a promise that the report is “verbal”.
  • Reluctance to tell you what equipment they use.
  • An inspection station that also offers to buy the car or find you a buyer.
  • Pressure to decide quickly, or to “fix the problems here” after the inspection.

Any one of these is a reason to ask more questions. Several together are a reason to look elsewhere.

Questions to ask before you drive across the city

  1. Do you sell or repair cars?
  2. Do you have a lift and a paint thickness gauge?
  3. Will I get a written report with photos?
  4. Can you read my car’s brand with your diagnostic computer?
  5. What will it cost, and does the price depend on what you find?

Five questions take two minutes on the phone and can save you a wasted trip or a poor inspection. Our answers: we neither sell nor repair cars, we have a lift, paint gauge and diagnostic computer, you receive a written report with photos, and the price is given before you travel and does not change with the result.

How long an inspection takes

The length depends on the car, but a full inspection usually takes between half an hour and an hour and a half. It covers the underside, paint readings on every panel, the engine bay, the computer scan and a road test. A check that finishes in ten minutes cannot have covered the same ground.
