What the best car inspection looks like

1. It is independent. The inspector does not sell cars and does not earn money from repairs on the car being inspected.
2. It covers every system. Computer scan, chassis and paint, engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and fluids, not only the parts that are easy to look at.
3. It uses equipment. A diagnostic computer, a way to read paint thickness and the means to check the engine properly, not only a visual walk-around.
4. It ends in a written report. Something you can keep, show a mechanic and use in a negotiation.
5. It is honest about limits. It says what it found and what it could not check, and it does not promise that nothing will ever go wrong.
6. It is clear about the price in advance. You hear the number before you travel.

Who does the best car inspections: centre, workshop or fuel station?

• Independent inspection centres fit the list best, because inspecting is their only business.
• Workshops know cars, but they profit from repairs, so there is a conflict when they judge a car you might buy.

Signs of an inspection you should not trust

• A very short check sold as a complete one.
• No written report.
• A price that changes after the car is on the lift.
• A provider who is also interested in buying or repairing the car.
• Guarantees that no car can honestly give.

Why price alone is a poor guide

Inspection prices vary, and the cheapest is rarely the best value. A low price can mean a short check, little equipment or no written report. A price that looks high can still be reasonable if it covers every system and ends in a report you can use. Judge the price against what you receive, and ask for the number in advance. A quick scorecard you can use

Give a provider one point for each yes. Is the inspector independent? Does the inspection cover every system? Does it use proper equipment? Is there a written report? Does the provider explain what it cannot check? Is the price clear before you travel? Five or six points is a provider worth booking. Three or fewer, keep looking.

Why independence matters most

Equipment can be bought and reports can be printed. Independence is the one thing that cannot be faked for long. If the person judging the car also stands to gain from selling it or repairing it, you are hearing an opinion with a price attached. An inspector who earns the same money whether the car is good or bad has no reason to shade the result.
