What to Inspect on a Used Car: The Checks That Matter Before You Pay

Most used cars look fine on the day you see them. The faults that cost real money are the ones you cannot see from the outside: a repaired chassis, a tired gearbox, a computer that was cleared an hour before you arrived. This guide shows what to inspect on a used car, which checks you can do yourself, and which ones need an engineer.

What to inspect on a used car, in order

Work in a fixed order. It stops you being rushed by the seller, and it stops you skipping the boring parts.

  1. Documents: the registration papers, the chassis and engine numbers, and whether the seller’s name matches the papers.
  2. Body and paint: panel gaps, colour differences, overspray and signs of repair.
  3. Under the bonnet: leaks, the condition of the oil and coolant, belts and hoses.
  4. Interior and electrics: seat wear against the mileage, air conditioning, windows, lights and every warning light on the dashboard.
  5. Cold start: the engine should start from cold, without smoke or knocking.
  6. Road test: acceleration, braking, steering, gear changes and noises at different speeds.
  7. Computer scan and a professional inspection for everything you cannot see.

The first six steps help you decide whether the car is worth your time. The last one tells you whether it is worth your money.

What checks should you do on a used car?

Think of the checks in three stages.

  • Before you go: read the advert carefully, compare the asking price with similar cars in our guide to used car prices in Egypt, and ask for clear photos of the papers.
  • At the car: look at it in daylight, ask the seller not to warm the engine before you arrive, and walk around it slowly.
  • After you leave: do not pay a deposit until an independent engineer has inspected the car.

Each stage removes weak cars before they cost you anything. Most bad cars fail at the first or second stage.

What are some basic things to check on a car yourself?

You do not need tools for these. You only need ten quiet minutes.

  • Tyres: do all four wear evenly, and are they the same brand and age? Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.
  • Fluids: oil that is black and thick, or coolant that looks rusty or oily, is a reason to ask questions.
  • Smell: a damp or musty smell inside can mean water has been in the car.
  • Dashboard: every warning light should come on when you turn the key and go off when the engine starts. A light that never comes on may have been disabled.
  • Air conditioning: it should blow cold within a few minutes.
  • Seats and pedals: heavy wear on a car with low mileage does not add up.

If something looks wrong, ask about it. How the seller answers tells you a lot.

What is the best advice for buying a used car?

  • Never decide on the first visit. A car that is good today will still be good after a day of thinking.
  • Do not pay a deposit before the inspection. A deposit makes it harder to walk away.
  • Use an independent engineer. A mechanic the seller suggests is not independent.
  • Judge the car, not the story. A good story about the previous owner is not evidence.
  • Be ready to walk away. There will be another car.

The same advice applies whether you buy from a showroom, a website or a private seller. Our guide to buying a car in Egypt covers the papers and the process after you have chosen.

What is the most important thing to consider when buying a used car?

The real condition of the car. Price, colour and model matter, but they come second. A cheap car with hidden damage costs more in the end than a fair-priced car in good condition, because the repair bill arrives after you have paid.

The only way to know the real condition is to have someone with the right equipment look at it before you pay. That means checking the chassis, the paint thickness, the engine, the gearbox and the car’s computer, then giving you a written report. You can see what that covers in our page on what a full car inspection includes.

Purchase car inspection in Cairo: what it costs

A purchase car inspection in Cairo is priced by the car and the job, not by one fixed figure. The things that decide the price are the type of car, how thorough the inspection is, and whether you come to the centre or we come to the car. We explain each one in our article on how much a car inspection costs in Egypt.

For a price on the car you are looking at, send us the make and model and the area where the car is. We will tell you the price before you book, so there is nothing to find out afterwards.

Mistakes that cost used car buyers money

  • Paying a deposit before the car has been inspected.
  • Looking at a car that was warmed up before you arrived, which hides cold start faults.
  • Trusting a clean engine bay. A freshly washed engine can hide leaks.
  • Ignoring a warning light because the seller says it is nothing.
  • Relying only on a computer scan. It finds electronic faults but not a repaired chassis. Our page on a car computer check explains what a scan can and cannot show.
